What are the best mufflers to run off of a 304 V8 with a manifold and duals out the back. I want it to still make some noise and don't want to break the bank. I'm haveing new duals ran out the back soon. Thanks for the advice.

Me myself I like to hear my ZZTop, Jamey Johnson & my bluegrass.. So I run the quitest mufflers I can find,, Plus you get to see more wildlife & don't draw attention to my old CJ with historical tags .. I go from inch & seven eights to two inch to help it breathe better,, It worked well with my 304,, Im planing on using the same set-up on my 360... They were just Walker brand,, 20 couple bucks apiece... Had them installed up in the frame out of the way ,,& they were Alluminised (sp?) they are 5 years old & still look great,,

I ended up swapping in an exhaust setup (manifolds back 2into-1) that had a Midas "flowmaster clone" (Ravin?) that sounds VERY quiet until romped, then has nice throaty report...
A big change from the loud (& very juvenile sounding) dual glasspacks I used to run!

I use the largest & Quietest mufflers I can fit into the space alloted.
We see a lot of wildlife like that, and when running on the farm we don't spook the livestock...
Also helps when I'm hunting, I don't scare everything off in a 3 mile radius while I'm driving in or out.
When wheeling with others, I don't want to be the obnoxious SOB that is blasting stereo or exhaust all over the place.
Do that around here, and you WILL NOT be invited back!
We are mostly old farts, so we talk from vehicle to vehicle, crack jokes, give each other a hard time, ect.
And most of us have hearing damage from work/younger-dumber days, so we value our hearing! (what little we have left!)
I like them nice and quiet so I can hear the parts rusting off my jeep and hitting the road!

I agree with quiet, as the others stated
However, in direct answer to your question, glass packs. They are cheap.
Untill they get burnt out they are mellow until you mash the skinny pedal,
Another benefit is some of them have round shoulders which is good
thing offroad.

There is one more big advantage to 'quiet'.....you can hear the engine and drive train.....you would be surprised at how many problems you can troubleshoot just by sound....and you would be amazed at how many guys have broke down because they could not hear noise coming from their engine that was a precursor to failure....
I have generic turbo mufflers on my SBC....very nice rumble but I can also hear everything under the hood....including the typical noise that the dist makes....
Most muffler shops carry a generic type turbo muffler...and by turbo, I mean lower restriction....like mine, you can't tell the difference between them and a Flowmaster.

I've had bad luck with Turbos. I believe ,mostly because of the fact that I am constantly in or crossing deep water when I wheel. I went through three sets of aluminized tin turbos from the most reputable exhaust shop in town. the internal baffles kept coming loose. I ended up ordering some cheap welded mufflers from Summit. No problems since. Others have had good luck with the flowmaster knockoffs from local shops. I think the added pressures from being under water and the fact that the baffles were always getting cold and wet, then hot and dry, repeatedly did them in prematurely.
