Here's what's in the '78 FSM. The door handle was the same as your '80. This is cryptic. I hope it helps. I have paddle-handle doors, and have never messed with the locks. doorlocka.jpg

Yeah, don't know what else to tell you. There's a section on locks in general, but it doesn't have any additional information regarding your problem. There's a current thread with links to lots of factory service manuals. You might try downloading one for your year. Maybe there's a bit more in a newer book.

With most locks of that type there's a button, screw or pin that will release the cylinder when the key is inserted and turned to the unlock position.

| | Lock handle
I am looking at the picture of your handle, Did this come with pre-cut keys? If so, you will have a tough time taking this apart. Your key has (5) five cuts corresponding to the 5 active wafers. However there is a (6) sixth wafer at the end of the cylinder, this is the retainer, the part that holds it together. 1) you have to pick the cylinder to the center ( 90 degrees) 2) You then have to reach in with a pick and pull back on the retainer. 3) At the same time you have to pull the cylinder out of the housing. You can NOT file these wafers to match your key, you will have to replace them with wafers that match your existing key. 4) When that's done, reassemble the handle exactly the way it came apart. I wish you the best of luck, this is tough even for someone who is familiar with these locks.

Thanks for all the information. After having a second thought i decided that's not worth the hassle. I will install the lock without re-keying, because most of the time i'm going to lock it from the inside anyway. And I did fine with no handle at all for 14 years | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
