| | Wagoneer dana 44 front brake question
I just noticed a problem with my front brakes. When I turn the wheels, the brake caliper hits the inner C long before the steering stop bolt does. Has anyone run into this before? Do I have the caliper brackets on the wrong sides?

If the caliper brackets were on the wrong side, wouldn't they have to be upside down too? I'll look for a picture in my FSM. What year axle are you using?

I'm using the knuckles and spindles I got from you, 5 lug ford hubs and rotors I got from Sour and late 70's wagoneer caliper brackets that are the same as the chevy brackets.

I scanned the exploded-view drawing from the '78 FSM. It's too big to post, so I'll e-mail it to you. It may help.

The brackets I have are the stamped sheet metal type that are also a splash shield, are the same for both sides. They are impossible to put on backward as the hole to go over the spindle is chamfered to fit over the radius on the spindle.
perhaps if you could post a picture that would help.

The brackets are the same top to bottom and side to side. This picture does not show it well but the stud with the arrow is exactly centered in the cut out for the caliper. Edit: I am not sure why the arrow did not show on the picture the stud I am referring to is the one just peaking out behind the spindle. I did a bunch of measurements to confirm this back when I planed to use front caliper mounts to make mounts for the rear, to use them with small calipers. That plan did not work out, but I still have a bunch of measurements from it.
It might be that the mounts that use a separate dust shield are different but I doubt it. From what I have seen the mount types are completely interchangeable and if they changed the location of the holes for the studs relative to the caliper it would require either a new knuckle with different stud locations or a different caliper with a new bleeder location neither of which I seem to have happened.
If it is your caliper hitting then I would not think the mount would be the cause. The location of the caliper (relative to the knuckle in and out wise) is determined by the rotor height and brake pad thickness, the mount simply needs to be close to the correct position, and the caliper will slide on its pins to adjust the last little bit as well as for wear.

I'm not sure why but my calipers seem to be mounted just a little too far toward the top. It just has me stumped.
