| | 79 cj7 4 wheel drive keeps popping out....
i recently purchased a 79 cj7 with a th400 transmission and the quadra trac transfer case, i soon found out that if you put it in 4 wheel drive and start giving it the gas it pops out of 4x4. i found that the vacuum lines were bad so i replaced all of these and it still did this. i talked to a guy and he told me it is probably the vacuum diaphram. so i also replaced this then the 4 wheel drive seemed to work fine going forward but had trouble engaging it in reverse. when in reverse the front drive line just shakes like it is partially engaged but wont spin the front wheels....now i am having trouble even getting it into 4x4...any help would be appreciated thanks.

The most important thing to start with is telling us is this transfer case stock or has it been converted to part time? Also, do you have locking hubs on the front or drive flanges?

Well, if he says it does, it probably does. There may be a couple things it could be. When you changed the vacuum diaphram, did you put both e-clips back on the shaft? One goes on each side of the shift fork.
Were both nylon pads on the fork end of the shift fork?
Did you put the detent spring and ball back under the shaft forward of the shift fork?
You may also check your switch for the lock indicator that gets pressed in by the very end of the shaft. I had one switch on a spare transfer case that was rusted and kept the shaft from moving all the way.
