| | Add Power Brakes to 84 CJ7
My 25 year old master cylinder just gave up. Rather than replace it I'd like to upgrade to power brakes. 84 CJ7/258
What's the most direct way to do this?
Anything to look out for?

Depending on budget, but my first choice would be to go with a YJ (87-95) set up. The system is probably a bit more efficient overall and can be found used. However, the brake lines for the YJ attach to the master on the inside side (engine side) rather than the outside side. You should be able to bend your CJ lines around to make it work. Also, a CJ booster will not bolt up to a YJ master and you may need adapters at the master cylinder ports themselves. Sounds way more complicated than it is. I had no problems swapping over.
If budget is no issue... yeah right. Go with one of the fancy dual diaphram aftermarket set ups you see in all the 4x4 rags.

I'm considering staying "stock" - CJ power brakes.
Any real drawbacks to this? I feel anything would be an improvement over the stock manual brakes.
Just looking around it seems that the mounting bracket is the hardest to find.
Should I luck up and run up on a CJ setup is there anything other than bolt-in and go? Say, like changing out the proportioning valve?

The valve should be the same. The brake lines for a power setup will be a little longer, but they are available new and not very expensive. You can stretch the standard lines but it's not a good idea. The mounting bracket shouldn't be hard to make. The critical dimension is between the MC mounting face and the firewall, and someone on the board can supply that.

When I did mine I pretty much just bolted a stock CJ one on. I didn't have any problem stretching the brake lines and used the same proportioning valve. In reality the power assist system uses a different brake pedal which raises it to the same height as the non power one. I didn't change mine. It will be lower than what you had but I learned to like it better as it's easier to run the brake and gas with one foot for hills and things like that.
Everything was pretty much a non issue. BUT!!!!!!!!
If you have a 6cyl you will need a different air cleaner to relocate it because the new setup will occupy the same space. You can get a stock one for pwr brakes used (seen them on ebay among other places) or just make your own. (thats what I did since I wanted a snorkle system.......but never finished it outside the jeep)
All in all an easy swap, about 2 hrs not counting the air cleaner deal.

I found a salvaged mc/booster/bracket from a CJ. Hope to have it here by the end of the week.
I managed to add the factory power steering to my CJ, so this should be a piece of cake.
I found that by picking brains BEFORE I do something like this I can avoid a mistake or two.
I have a MC2150 on my 258 with a small air filter - it appears it will clear OK - but I'm prepared to make some changes if needed. Thanks for the heads up.

MC2100 with a 9 inch air filter clears fine.

IIRC an GMC Astro air cleaner will work... I'm not sure about the GMC Safari.
