Default Tranny Cooler Causing Engine to Overheat?

I'm still battling my overheating problem.. I have an 82 CJ-7 with a carb'd SBC 350 and a 700-R4 tranny. The Jeep never overheats at idle. It overheats when going steady highway speeds. I would think the overheating should not occur while the airflow of highway speeds is flowing through the radiator. Could this be caused by my tranny cooler being mounted on the front of the radiator and restricting airflow? Can I remove the tranny cooler and splice the supply and return lines to see if the problem is fixed or will I damage the tranny if I do this?

Any help is appreciated!

How's the exaust system? Could the cat be plugged?

Is the engine running lean?

Do you have electric or a mechanical engine fan?

Is the transmission cooler the only cooler for the ATF, or does it also run through the radiaor? If it's the only cooler... don't bypass it. If it's an auxilary cooler, bypass it.

I have the exhaust straight piped right now. It had a flowmaster muffler, but I read somewhere that it could be causing too much backpressure so I cut it out to try that. It did help the overheating, but didn't totally solve the problem.

The engine isn't running lean...

I have an electric fan.

I believe the tranny cooler is the only cooler for the ATF. I will have to check to make sure, but I don't think it runs through the radiator..

You could relocate the cooler and run another fan for it...

Can you manually turn the electric fan on? If so, what happens?

Do you have a fan shroud? If not, build one....

Mine does the same thing... sort of. It runs warmer but still within the green. Do you have the stock gauge or an after market one with numbers? If the stock one, is it going out of the green?

You mentioned airflow thru the radiator. Well, is there mud in your radiator fins or is the radiator just beat?
My YJ used to run hot on the highway, especially hills. I have an auxiliary tranny cooler as well as a winch restricting airflow. It idled at a normal temp.
I finally replaced the radiator one day and the problem is gone. The old radiator had mud and missing fins. I couldn't see these problems because of the tranny cooler.

Do you know for sure that the radiator will flow enough water to keep the engine cool at highway speeds? Has it been flow tested by a radiator shop? I had a car that developed an overheating problem at highway speeds after a motor swap. It would melt down at highway speeds but it would idle all day and never overheat. Long story short, the radiator would not flow enough water at highway speeds to keep the engine cool, but was fine at idle.
