BTW.. this drives me crazy that the emissions pass with flying colors but the visual check of the timing would fail the test. The test guy knows the emissions are good so who cares after that point??? Let the car pass.....
Obviously you need more experience with bureaucrats.

The boy is doing well. He will be 1 yr next month.. Can you believe it???

I'm going to talk to the owner tomorrow on my way home from work. I stamped the pulley where it should be....

Here is some pix of the guy. Notice his headset. He flys with me quit a bit.

For what it's worth I painted my 1985 marks like this.

And in response to your question about possibly being rejected because the timing marks aren't stock, if you find out that your marks aren't calibrated properly, fill the stock notch with body putty and make a new notch in the proper place. Then paint the pulley and the inspectors will never know that it's not stock.

Thanks Jimmy and Jim for the ideas. I'm going to try and get back to the smog shop on Friday. I'll give you an update on the results

*****Update******

I found TDC..wink...wink... made a new mark and guess what... it passed. I had to get a new gas cap and plug my idle stop solenoid to make it look as if was hooked up and working.. Ca smog is such a joke, if it passes the emissions part, than they should leave you alone, all said and done, it cost me $110 in smog test fees.

Yeah, life would be so much easier for everyone. That's the way it was here. They started testing when my '78 about fifteen years old and the smog stuff was long gone. Fortunately it still passed, after I retarded the timing a little from ideal. All I had to do was put an unvented gas cap on for the test every other year. Now there aren't enough old crocks on the road to justify maintaining the exhaust sniffers, so I don't need to get it tested any more.
