Default Axle width difference

Did a drum to disc conversion on my '75 D30 using Jeep parts. So now my D44 rear is 2 1/2" narrower than the D30. Problem?

Welcome to the board!

What Raduckal said. For reasonable use of a 34-year-old Jeep, no problem. If you plan to autocross it, well . . .

THANKS for the replies.

I just found a magazine I saved that gives all Jeep axle measurements. It reads '72-'75@ 50.5" rear and 51" front. '76-'84@ 50.5" rear and 53" front. Even the wide tracks show a 2 1/2" diff. Guess I'm within specs. Still, that offset sure looks strange on a rolling chassis.

I never put all the specs together to see that, but what they did is obvious. When they went to disk brakes in '76 they used the same axle housing as they had with the drums, and the disk hubs widened the track.

I believe you'll find the drum & disc hubs are exactly the same dimensions, save for some light machining on the backside of disc hubs (so the rotor will sit square, where the drum hubs were left rough cast at the stud bosses).

My drum brake equipped D30 was already running "disc" hubs (required no machining) when converted to discs and there was no change in track width...

Also, the width differences referenced are between narrow-trac (51") and wide-trac (53"). No idea why the "mix&match", but this was AMC!

My '79 CJ-5 had no power brakes w/only 10" drums and discs. I ran 33's and never really missed the pb's so I'm not putting it on this one either. With discs and 11" drums you'll be good to go.

It's not a problem, but if it bothers you you can run spacers on the rear to make the trac width a lil closer. All CJ's ran a wider front trac than rear. That is about how much difference front to rear in all the years.

Probably won't bother with spacers since my set-up was designed with the offset.

I shoulda posted the wide-track specs in my post. The D30 front is 56". Both the AMC20 and D44 rears are 54.5". Still, there's that 2 1/2" offset. Only AMC knows why.
