Default As Usual, It's the Simple Things

Well....we can close out the TBI Guru thread......I fixed my fuel problem...well, at least found it.....

I replaced the fuel pump last night....still not pumping gas....

So I pulled the jeep into the drive....and by pull I mean using a come-along to pull it up my drive......slight ramp.....

Dropped the tank.....not sure how I did it, but I pinched the fuel line between the bracket and the tube....I think it happened a couple of years ago when I had to drop the tank to replace the sending unit....

In addition to being pinched, the hose connection at the pick up is not tight and it was most likely sucking air....and I know now why I was leaking gas...the big nut the secures the pickup to the tank was not tight....

Yep....it's the simple things.....

Oh....and this pic? Has nothing to do with the tank.....I just like it....

Nice tanks.

You have to be careful with those pickup lines. Wait, let me try that again. You have to be careful with where you put your hose. Oops, that's not right either. Once more. I had a problem with my hose being too long. Yeah, yeah, that's the ticket. It lay in a loop which relaxed over time intil it developed a kink. Then it wouldn't suck any more.

So....is Permatex Clear RTV good against Gas?

Seems I had more issues......while pulling the pickup out of the tank, the screen fell off in the tank.......and the float has a crack in it and was about 2/3 full of gas.....and my tank was about 2/3 full of gas.....oh, what fun trying to get the gas out.....at least I had a couple of 5 gal tanks handy....(I knew I would get to use my new gas tanks for something).

Ok...so back to the original question....do you think the Permatex RTV Silicone will survive in gas?

So, is there anything that I can use to seal the crack in the plastic float? And seal the pickup screen to the pickup tube?

Enquiring minds want to know.......

Humm... replace the float, it should be an off-the-shelf part.

Sealing the pickup screen (sock) to the tube? I'd try flaring the tube ever so gently and then attaching the sock so it can't come over the flair....

I went around and around with the float problem. I couldn't find a replacement so I tried several ways to make one but never got a good result. Finally I bought a new pickup/sending unit from a local Jeep dealer, which was a good thing because the sock was falling apart anyway.

And that is why folks should use FI rated hoses even on the return line of a loop type FI system. If that was the return line the pressure would have built up to the capacity of the pump (not the regulator in the TBI)!!

Glad you found the issue.

Heck... I used steel brake line sections for my EFI lines. But then it only runs at about 12 psi...

Me too!

In my case it was the "thrifty" part showing through!... $4 for 8' of hard-line versus $3/FOOT for the FI rated hose . I was able to get by with a 18" section ("Help!" bubble pack) of the FI hose to use for coupling the hard lines together (still have 1/2 left over)

Lines should only be seeing 15# (TBI regulator back to the pump outlet)
