Default More Carb/Ignition Problems

Short history. 258, Nutter Bypass, Stealth HEI

Rebuilt my 2100. Ran fine for a week then all of a sudden would only stay running on high idle. This is why I suspected the carb.

Rebuilt it again. Could find no vacuum leaks anywhere. Same problem.

Started idling very unevenly - like a cylinder wasn't firing.

Pulled plugs - all carbon fouled. Repalced with new.

Pulled TFI junkyard coil and replaced.

Pulled 25 year old distributor. Gear good, cam gear good. Workings a little loose. Replaced with rebuilt dizzy.

Fired up - now will only idle slow - struggles - terrible throttle response.

Pull any plug wire at the dizzy cap and the motor will die.

I still suspect the carb is a contributor - rebuit on the way.

I feel like I have too many things going wrong all at once.

I'm already bald so I have no more hair to pull out - what should I be looking for?

Sorry....couldn't resist that......

Did you replace the float when you rebuilt it? It is one of the most common causes of flooding....

Also....are you running the stock fuel pump? And...is the fuel filter installed properly? There is a return line off the filter that sends the unused fuel back to the gas tank....if you don't have this installed correctly, you have too much fuel pressure at the carb and it can cause the needle to open up and flood...

Stock fuel pump. Stock fuel filter w/return line on top.

Tried two different brass floats - both were good.

Sounds like you *MIGHT* have something stuck in the needle and seat and letting it way too much fuel.

While waiting on the Carb (Which I suspect):
1. Verify each and every cyl has a spark.
2. Verify firing order.
3. How did you make sure no leaks? WD40 (or eq.)?

it has to be simple, just has to be...

I agree with the needle seat but it has been cleaned and replaced 3 times. This thing really has me puzzled. That's why I decided to punt and get another carb, already built, to my specs. I'll worry about the current carb mystery at a later date.

Firing order is correct (triple checked)

Used propane to check for leaks. No luck

Son was helping me with spark test. He saw spark on #1- I did not. Later #1 lit me up!

I'm really hoping this is a carb with a gremlin and the new carb will make all of this go away.

It runs like this from the get go? Cold or hot? Or does it do OK for a few minutes then start to act up.

If it starts and runs OK for a few minutes, you might check you fuel tank cap. Just because you've been over everything else and fuel system pressure buildup can do weird things. Easy enough to check... remove cap and road test with rag in fill hole.

I will add that I did have an intake gasket leak once on my 4.2. Not to the point that it affected the idle, but I got an actual whistling noise from the area of the carb and after several attempts at finding the problem, I finally located the gremlin. I run a dual outlet Headman header. The Headman gasket disintegrated for some reason. I replaced it with the stock two piece Felpro gasket set and haven't had an issue since.

Have you tested the vacuum with a gauge at idle, WOT, etc? That can help pinpoint problems.
