Default Snapped lower front shock mount

Well - I've done it again. I went to finish up the job and put the front shocks in. Rear's went fine - but the lower front shock mount bolt broke off today.

How do I go about fixing this?

Jeep is a '81 CJ7.

Thanks everyone,

-John

Take the plates off, grind the welds that hold the stubs on and then weld on new bolts that match the old ones.

I have a MIG welder and I've done some basic welding in the past.

Should I be concerned about this weld job? Should I call in a professional?

Thanks,

-Jon

If it's just the treaded stud part, it's no load bearing, so it's easy to weld.

If it's the actual shock mount where the rubber in the shock fits on to, then you have a problem...
That IS a load bearing part...

Those plates aren't very expensive to replace and about everyone that carries jeep parts has them...

I once tried to oxy-acetylene weld one of these studs onto a Jeep spring plate, I think it was for a late 70's year. Some how in getting parts we ended up with more plates for one side then the other. It did not weld worth a damn, and the puddle acted very odd. It almost acted like the plate was cast iron, it wanted to melt way to easy and had a lot of slag. The weld cracked after only a week or so. I have successfully welded cast to steel before but never for use in such a high impact situation. So while welding maybe worth a try my experience was not good.

I have had a couple u-bolt plates tear at the shock mounts. I just hammered them back into shape, ground v's at the cracks and welded them up. If your welds don't hold, you'll be right back where you are. lol
