Default wiring for a welder?

Ok I ran wire to the garage for a welder, 50a 220v 4 strand. Its in the breaker box with a 50a breaker, The receptical is a 4 prong 50a range receptical.
Now I find out that most welders are 3 prong plug-ins. So how do I build a converter. get a range pluge and eliminate 1 wire? if so which one red, wht, blu, blk?
Thanks

You probably need NEMA 6-50R receptacle for the welder's plug, but check it to be sure.

See if this help answer your wiring question, explains it better than I could.
How to Wire a 220v Outlet.

Just change the receptacle on the end of the in house run...

Cheaper than building an 'Adapter'.
Turn OFF the breaker,
Unbolt the current receptacle,

Connect your new receptacle, Black & Red are the 'Hot' Legs and go to the 'Flat' blade connectors, Doesn't matter which one goes to which side,

White is the 'Neutral' line, and connects to the 'U' shaped connector,

Green or Bare is 'Earth Ground' and connects to the box housing or can be left free in the receptacle, but clip it back so it doesn't short on anything...

Bolt things back to the wall and you are done!
Not much to it really...

It's not quite 'Code', but I have more than one outlet on the same line,
Just jumper the wires down to the next outlet.

They don't want you to do that because they think you would plug in TWO devices at the same time,
But I'm never running TWO things at the same time, so it's still well within the limits of the breaker/wire.

Glad to hear you are up and running!

NOW--- GO WELD SOMETHING!
