Default HEI/258 Delay in Crank

I finally made it around to trying the real HEI upgrade. I had done the Nutter Bypass in the past along with the Stealth HEI. I had the opportunity to make the swap and thought I'd give it a shot.

My setup is a 1984 CJ7, 258, MC2100, HEI dist/coil pack, Mean Green starter and Alternator.

I got it installed and running at 9 BTDC. The odd thing is, when cranking, it starts when you let off of the key. Usually you turn the key, it starts and you release. Now, it turns over - doesn't start right away - I release the key and it fires up.

I have the HEI dist powered through a 4-lead 12v 30A relay where it gets a full 12v on cranking/run.
30 - connected to bat @ solenoid
85 - ground
86 - acc switched power
87 - to distributor

Any ideas why I'm getting this delayed start in the cranking?

Where did you hook up the 12Vdc to the coil? Is it affected by the movement of the key from Start to Run modes?

Everything runs through the relay.

The 12vdc supplying power to the relay is coming from the battery side of the starter solenoid (constant 12vdc).

The "switch" in the relay gets its power (cue) from the 12vdc oil pressure line (key on/power on).

The coil in turn gets 12vdc via the battery (side of solenoid).

OK... that's a good place for constant 12Vdc to power the HEI. Is the HEI new?

Yes.

Been sitting in a box for about a year waiting for me to get off my butt.

I'd try putting 12VDC directly to the coil, eliminating the relay. Then, if it works, the problem is in the ignition supply circuit.

Good idea. I guess I could redirect my wire on the relay from the oil pressure directly to the coil for a test.

Yep... just be able to disconnect to shut off the engine.

No, you don't.

Accessories is only on in the run and acc switch position. It goes dead in the start position and your relay drops out until you let the key return to the run position.
