| | Which Carb kit for the Carter?
Ok, I know the vast majority thinks it's a waste of time to rebuild but I need the jeep running now and I don't have the time to go hunting for a different carb.
Not to mention that it will be rebuilt for free by a guy that has been a farm mechanic for over 50 years at his families huge farm. I've never been satisfied with my rebuild attempts and he actually enjoys doing it and has a well known reputation for rebuilding carbs.
My Wrangler had the solenoid version of the Carter but I did the Nutter and swapped in a Carter off a 85-87 Eagle, After checking the Napa website it became clear that all Eagles and many Jeeps with the Carter all used the same kit.
Just one thing there are two kits available the: MPF 31207B, and the CRB 25671C.
Besides the the CRB one being $5 more can anyone explain what the difference is does that one include the float?
The only description difference on the site says the CRB one is "Type: C-2" what does that mean?
Thanks for any response!

Wow, 40 some views and still no suggestions? :/
I thought I was just missing something simple.
Anyway here is a link to the Napa search if that makes it any clearer. NAPAONLINE®

I feel your pain but am not sure what to suggest. When I rebuilt mine they asked for the data on the little brass tag, which on mine was long gone. Eventually I told them just to get the first kit on the list. I wrote the number down sadly I wrote it in the book I kept for that jeep and it went with it in the sale. For what it is worth The kit worked and it was almost all gaskets. Mine was a 1980 so no stepper motor.
Good luck.

IMHO... dump the carb and build a junk-yard GM EFI system. It's cheap, easy, efficent and easily maintable.

Believe me fellas, if I had the time and money I would be doing it, but this is my current daily driver which I need to get me to Seattle and back every other weekend so right now that is not an option.
I would love to got to EFI is there a site or a few that show how it's done with the 258? It could be very possible I will have the luxuary to do this in the near future just not right now. :/
Anyway, I got a kit here tomorrow morning through Napa not sure if it's one of the two listed on their site as the guy ordered it by the Carter # on the carb.
Thanks Again

YES! The GM TBI system is adaptable to just about gas engine you can name! Bill & the guys over on the BinderPlanet (formerly BinderBulletin) have it down to a science! With the knowledge there, folks have TBI'd just about anything you can name (even a Corvair w/ homemade DIS )... and there are roughly 5% Jeep guys there. Many AMC I6 & V8 conversions have started there!
Following Bills fairly simple guidelines, how-to's, & part list, I dropped a TBI system (minus EGR & VSS) on the late-'70s AMC 304 in my Commando (21(00) Gun Salute! Goodbye old friend... I). Not as "easy" as blowing $1000+ on a kit comprised of the exact same parts I snabbed from a JY for less than $150, but it truely wasn't that hard. I started reading while off work during Christmas (80+ hours worth) before deciding to give it a go... I can truly say it's the BEST mod I've ever done to my junk! My brother was so impressed, he HAD to have it too, so I've collected all the bits to convert his 258 this winter.
Since the '88-'92 GM throttle bodies only came in 2 flavors venturi/flow wise... 1 11/16" (used on 4.3, 5.0, 5.7) and 2" (454 BBC) with different rate injectors, the later is recommended for the AMC 401... running the same ECM (*different binaries*) & sensors as the rest...
