Default switch to T5 in my yj?

I have a 95 yj with the 2.5 in it. I recently blew my 5th gear and wondered if I could put a T5 in the ax-5's place? My buddy left a T5 in my shed, so I can put it in at very little cost. I don't do any major wheeling, have a 4" leaf kit and 33" tires on it. No gearing, probably why I blew 5th. Does someone make an adapter kit for this? Thanks in advance for any info.

Ditto! Like swapping a D35 out for a (rear) D30, neither are gonna win any contests...

Keep it simple.

Rebuild the with an AX-5 rebuild kit off Ebay. That will buy you time while you look for a better transmission.

Not worth it, the ax5 is going to be the cheapest/ easiest option at around $1000 for a remanufactured ax5. Welcome the the world of jeeps and throwing away all your $$.

Why it work work to swap in a t-5 on the cheap
-the amc 2.5 has a different bell housing than the rest of the jeep motors (amc v8's/ 258/ 4.0) so you would need a 2.5 bell housing
-The 2.5 in a 95 uses a crank shaft posistion sensor
-Your current 231 t-case uses a 21 spline input and the t-5 will have a 23 spline output
-Drive shaft lengths might be different

The gearing on your ax5 and the t-5 is going to be real similar. Look into an nv4500 or a granny 4 speed if you want gearing.

Thanks everyone for your reply's. I was just looking to be cheap and lazy. I will eventually rebuild the ax5. I'll be driving a 4 speed for a while! No highway!

Just look at it as a forced "cheap" differential gear swap. If you had 4.10's ..I think you're now at 4.88's without the smaller pinion (in effect). Not bad for a lost gear to manage to give you all that utility in the loss ...and all at "NO CHARGE".
