Default OT can't find PS pump pulley

I am helping a friend with his chesapeake bay work boat. The engine is a 74 455 Olds. After installing a new power steering pump to operate a hydraulic (crab) line puller, We can't find a (V groove) pulley anywhere. We took one from a 70's caddy but the bore is too small, it measures 5/8", did not have a mic. The pulley needed is `the one for a key way shaft with a retaining nut, instead of pressed on. The local J. yards in our area do not have much from this era. Are there any other, probably GM, vehicles that share this PS pump for a 74 455 Olds? A new one would be fine too. The last time I went to the dealership, they did not have anything earlier then 8?, it was for a jeep though. Any ideas?

go back to the junkyard, they should be able to go into thier puter and tell you what other GMs have the same pump(if not able to look up the actual pulley), the J yards up here all have some sort of online lookup....cant remember the name of it but the time i needed it, they set me up with the part i needed. had it shipped up from a yard down in maryland or something (it was a flywheel).

basically, any J yard that wants to serve the customer will be able to cross-reference parts/ find them for you.

good luck

edit...D'OH! its' fer a boat....perhaps bring in the motor serial numbers? are there any "boat" junkyards around the bay? they'ed prolly have a similar ability i would think...worst case, if that caddy pulley is the correct diameter, look into havin it rebored to the size needed, any machinist can do it, as long as there is enough meat at the hub it should be no problem.

Most Saginaw pumps used a press fit pulley with no keyway. If I remember correctly the Big Buicks used a Delphi pump. These pumps move a little more fluid then the Saginaw's and used a pulley attached with a keyway and a nut on the end of the shaft.

IH pickup trucks (but not Scouts) used the Delphi pump as did many medium trucks of all makes.

I think this is the pulley you want 5/8" ID with key way, or is that the one that is too small?

Thanks, this imfo made me look at the caddy pulley alittle closer. This (caddy) pulley was the right one all along. Five minutes a round file to clean up the bore some and it slid on like butter. And I said I "...could not find a pulley anywhere." What a tool I am.

Glad, to here you got the pulley to work.

One thing you many want to look into is the flow out of the pump. Power steering pumps have a built in flow limiter, that bypasses flow back to the reservoir. These generally open at about 2.5 to 3 GPM for large car and truck pumps. Most pumps make this much flow at about 700 RPM. Depending on the speed you want to get from the pot puller and its motor and hydraulic line size; you many want to look at tweaking the flow control valve to open at a higher flow rate.

The pictures in this post are for a Saginaw pump but the Delphi works in a similar way. Old post
