One of my trade magazines has an article about the new Caterpillar bulldozer with electric drive. I've long thought that one could make a dandy rock crawler with each wheel driven by a hydraulic motor - it could have better maneuverability than a Bobcat and huge suspension travel and ground clearance. Maybe you could do the same thing with electric motors.
You can see more of the new Cat at www.cat.com/d7e

I've been eyein' those field sprayers lately. There's a lot of them doing work here in the Palouse wheat fields. I want one.
They ain't fast but they've got the ground clearance. It may be a fun project (If I had the money) to monkey around with one and turn it into a rock crawler. Heck, all ya gotta have is money. A mod here, a mod there and pretty soon you got a fun buggy to ride that would ford small rivers and not even get your feet wet.

wasn't there some competition rock crawler that did 4 wheel hydro drive with 4 independent suspension arms that he could lift at will to get over stuff ? I seem to remember reading about it somewhere.....

What I love about it is the suggestion, by Cat, that it's a new idea...the Germans were using this same design on tracked vehicles in WWII.

Yeah, but probably not with solid state controls. Locomotives have been diesel/electric for half a century.
