Well....a bit more info.....
As I noted above, NAPA replaced the pump for free.....
I did more research and found a lot more sights that showed the Carter as being the best choice....except for one or two links, no real Carter pump failures.....
And....it would appear that I maybe had it installed wrong....the filter is supposed to be 'before' the pump. I installed mine after.....I figured that if factory setups had the pump in the tank and the filter after it....that was the right way to do it....
And.....according to the installed instructions...the pump should be good to be mounted up to 24" from the bottom of the tank....in my case I'm within about 10".
I guess I have some plumbing to do....

The pump can handle bigger particles then the injectors can but should still have a filter before it.

put a filter before the pump.. mount the pump as low as you can in relation to the tank.. for pump's, get a F-150 pump, P2000 or whatever.. you can get them at any auto store and will work fine for you...

NAPA has already given me a new pump.....According to the specs it should be able to draw from the tank even if it's 24" above the tank....
I would have to replumb everything to make a different pump work....it's going to be a lot easier to bend my hard line on the frame down a couple of inches and mount the pump on the bottom of the frame cross member....with the fuel filter behind it.....this will put me at most about 8" above the bottom of the tank.

If you read the "As Usual, It's the Simple Things" thread you will know that I found my problem.....
Pinched fuel line
Loose clamp at the pickup
Pickup screen fell off
And the tank sending unit float had a leak in it
Replaced the hose.
Routed it correctly so it won't get pinched
Lowered my fuel pump about 3" anyway....even though the Carter manual says it can be 24" above the bottom of the tank
Repaired the foat and pickup screen
Put tank back in
Turned the key...fuel pump ran for it's 2 seconds...and just before it shut off I could hear is slow down as it started to load up with fuel....one more cycle and fuel was up to the TB...cranked right up.
In retrospect, I was always hearing a gurgling sound from the TBI....in reality I think it was the noise of air being pushed through the Throttle Body.....
Looking forward to driving it in the morning....I suspect that it's going to run better....and I suspect that I'll have more fuel pressure.....
I'm curious to see if it's going to fix my high HC readings recorded in my last smog test.....I'll let you know.
