Exactly like the title says. 97 Wrangler. Headlight knob came straight out in my hand. ~awesome!~ After tearing my dash apart and breaking more plastic bits than I'd have liked to have, I got the dash and firewall apart enough for me to get my hands in there to feel around the headlight switch. The switch appears to be welded onto tabs protruding from the firewall. Wonderful. How do I remove the switch so I can try to fix it? Once I get the switch removed, how do I keep the knob seated therein? I've noticed a little spring-loaded pin at the top of the switch unit. Pressing this does nothing. Needing headlights and needing them right now, I pulled the plastic contact plate off the bottom of the switch and probed around with a wire until I got headlights. After going through numerous combinations of pin jumps, I managed to find the headlights, dash, dome, door buzzer and light bar lights. However, I cannot figure out which pins to jump to get the running lights. Any ideas? In conclusion: 1997 Wrangler 4.0 1: Headlight knob came straight out, retainer seems to be broken. UPDATE: I figured out how to get the headlight switch off of its bracketry, it appears that the cowling around the knob's shaft was a screw. Removing said screw got the headlight switch out. Awesome. Once the switch was out, I could hear a rattle therein, which I'm just going to go out on a limb and assume is the broken detent. That still doesn't solve my problem as to which set of jumpers to jump to get the running lights on. Any ideas? I suppose that since these parts appear to be somewhat universal, I'm going to a wrecking yard tomorrow afternoon to try and find a suitable replacement switch. Doesn't change the fact that I need running lights. |

There should be a little button near the front of the switch along the shaft...Press this in while you pull out the shaft and it releases it so you can pull it all the way out. Unless you mean the shaft broke off inside...if so, you might just have to go buy a new switch along with a handle. I'm not sure you can get the switch apart and then back together.

For that button to release the knob you have to get the knob pulled out to the right position. Find the position by holding the button down and pulling the knob out. The knob will be blocked after passing one or two detents. Release the button, pull the knob a whisker more and press the button down. Then the knob and its shaft will come right out. The switch is a very common item. Any parts house will have one. The knob is different to match the rest of the knobs in the Jeep, but lots of junkyard knobs and shafts will work - just not match. My guess is that the catch mechanism in the switch is what broke. I've never seen or heard of a shaft breaking. Just get to a parts house with the old switch and get a new one. Should be $20 to $30. Not worth the trouble of getting a junkyard switch of unknown condition. |
