Post Engine swap advice needed

So I am planning on taking the I6 and AX15 out of my YJ and replacing it with a chevy 350 and SM 465. I have the engine and the transmission. I am in a debate with myself about what to do about the transfer case. Should I replace it with a bolt up NP205 or just adapt the NP231? If I do the NP205 I will need an axle swap due to the passenger side drop. I don't know what to do. Can I get some advice please?

I'm just curious as to what your plans for the YJ are. Do you plan to wheel it a lot or is this a mall crawler jeep? if your gonna wheel it a lot an axle swap might be a good idea anyways... I'm just a rookie girl though so don't listen to me, I was just curious.

205 is stronger than 231. Waggy Dana 44 is stronger than the D30. Narrow a late model pass drop Waggy axle to early Waggy length, use early Waggy shafts. Go hi-steer on it, up grade to 297x Ujoints. Grab the Waggy's rear Dana 44 while you are in it, get rid of the Dana 35 in the back of your YJ, get new rims (you will now be 5 on 5.5 instead of 5 on 4.5). Reroute exhaust to go on the driver side of the 205. Done.

waggie axles are 6 on 5.5 (same as chevy and toyota)
unless "early" waggie shafts are different. My 79 waggie axle is 6 lug.

Rick, You are correct. Still means new rims.

If it wuz me I would use the 231. In the first place the low is lower; 2.72 compared to 1.95, so that works good with your Shiv-Lay. THEN if you get real tricky, you can always go to the NV242 case (which I THINK the Hummer uses, only with a heavier chain) later on with no modifications needed. The adapter needed to connect that 231/242 family to the SM465 may be way less money than doing the big axle swap-o change-o.

Yeah, but with V8 power you can't keep the D35. Gotta go to sumthin'. 8.8 maybe. Probably don't even want to keep the D30.

If you're going to go through the hassel of a axle swap, you might as well chuck the 205 and adapt a 300 to the SM465. The 300 is a hell of a lot lighter than the 205. If you keep the stock Tcase you could get you a set of D44's out of a later model waggy with the driver side front diff and be good to go......

daily driver-weekend warrior type of jeep. strong yet practical. I have some serious customizing in store for the jeep but it all counts for naught if i don't have the proper drive train.

If you think you are going to do an axle swap, have you considered using brand new from the factory D44's for the Rubicon? Cut off the hardware for the coil springs, weld on perches and you have electric lockers and 4.10 gears in a D44 that is the right width.....and has disk brakes....

Rumor has it that a set for front and back is about $3000......that is a hard price to argue with. It cost me about $1100 just for solid axles, ARB and new gears for my AMC 20.
