where do you guys go to find hard to find parts..... like the ignition linkage gear behind the key and tumbler? I'm having a hard time finding one for my 83 CJ7. I've tried several of the auto parts stores and even tried the Jeep dealer. one place had one for a tilt wheel, but mine is a non tilt.

Fill out your profile... year/model of Jeep, etc.
In many cases (CJ7, etc) that's a standard GM part found in any good NAPA or auto parts store.

Welcome to the board!
What LEVE said, plus the junkyard. Many recent Jeeps use standard GM columns - '85 Jeep, same as '85 Buick.

Tweaky,
I don't know if you ever found the part you were looking for, but if you are ever having a hard time finding a part and think a used part would be fine enough, let Phil at Max-Bilt Jeeps know and he should be able to help you. Besides the 100's of used CJ parts (I get to help with inventory right now...guess how fun that is!) he can also track down the NAPA part number for you. Our tech advisor works at Napa and getting you the part number so that you can just call up the store and tell them the part number might make it easier for the counter guy to help you.
Hope that helps!

Welcome to the board, MX. Glad to see another CJ enthusiast. With two of them, no less. It's all I can manage to keep one running.
I wonder if Phil could find a master cylinder rebuild kit for my '78. My go-to local guy thought he had the only one in stock anywhere - it showed on a distrubutor's inventory - but when he ordered it the bin was empty. Doesn't really matter - he got me a new master cylinder instead.

Don't forget on the CJs AMC used parts from other automotive companies. If you are looking for something for the steering column, look at old GM cars in the junkyard. They are similar columns, and use a lot of the same parts. Probably a bit cheaper at the GM dealer, than trying to locate an AMC part.

You will find some steering column parts at most Chrysler and GM dealers. The Chrysler dealers have always been able to cross ref. Jeep Part numbers for me in the past. Often the price isn't as much as you would expect, have to try and find out.
I still get shifter boots for my T-5..
Here's a page I put together a few years ago. You will find links to pages with Jeep part numbers at the bottom, take those to a Chrysler dealer and see if it works out. Tilt Column Fix

Yah, the CJ is pretty fun. We have 3 running CJ's at our place...I just hope they stay that way, for while at least!
For the Rebuild kit, if you go to Napa, you can give them these codes: 10X1 3/4 brakes with manual brakes calls for a Napa number of 1355 line code UP, and 11X2 in brakes with power is a 946 and 11X2 manual brakes is 947. If they don't have them in stock, they shouldnt be to far out if they need to order them. Hope that helps! | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
