(08-20) 12:02 PDT ANTIOCH -- A motorist who stopped to help another driver whose car plunged down an embankment in unincorporated Contra Costa County was struck and killed this morning by a third vehicle, authorities said.
The victim was identified by the coroner as 56-year-old William Tindall Jr. of Clayton.
The incident began about 4:45 a.m. south of Antioch when the driver of an SUV crashed through a fence and went down the embankment on Marsh Creek Road east of Deer Valley Road, the California Highway Patrol said.
Tindall got out of his pickup truck to help the SUV driver, was hit by a car and killed, the CHP said. The car's driver stopped at the scene.
Both directions of Marsh Creek Road were closed for a time as CHP officers investigated the incident. The road is used by commuters as a shortcut between Concord and Brentwood.
