Jim, if you have problems with Win 2K, you'll have problems with Linux (Unless your an ol' DOS dog). What Cad version are you using?

I have no problems with W2K except that the latest version of Autodesk Inventor won't run on it. The install program detects it and stops.

Well Jim, you're kinda-sorta stuck. Autodesk Inventor won't run on any Linux platforms that I'm aware of, nor will it work with any of the Linux Windows emulators (like WINE) either... If it does work on XP, then the best thing to do is bite the bullet and load XP in Classic Mode, learn the changes and hope for the best till the next OS comes out. If you're lucky, Autodesk will port it over to MAC or Linux, but don't hold your breath on that one.

I'm not holding my breath - that's a lot of code for Autodesk to rework for another OS.

And I don't forsee MS putting out another OS like W2k - one without the BS. I'm wrestling with XP, and have taken it five falls to three. I think I'm going to win, but it does chap my donkey to use it since I've not found a single improvement over 2000, but there are several minor and one major reduction in functionality. I can accept hassles if there are offsetting enhancements, but I see no such offset with XP so far.

As a guy who's Masters Degree Thesis could have been titled "Microsoft Windows Sucks" I can testify that Win 2K wasn't without it's share of BS. I can remember when I learned Win 2K... an outgrowth of a unholy union of Win 98 and NT. It was brutal...

I'm reminded of William Shakespeare's Macbeth, three witches brewing cocktail to loose on the unsuspecting public and businesses. Not one Windows version have I liked... and resisted learning each successive version. But the way has been clear and I've been forced to learn each one. With each successive release something has to give. A detail here is lost, a detail there is forgotten, a change here, and a change there. Soon, the OS is so foreign, that I almost give up . But I slog on, and learn as much as I can.

I'm glad I won't be forced to learn another one...

I have to admit that 2000 was less pure than NT, and NT wasn't perfect. Oh, well.

Back to the original post, I installed 3.0.1 and it didn't help a bit. Then I figured out that the problem isn't Firefox - it's . . . XP. I tried to install it on this computer first but it wouldn't go. It came up with a message about having to turn of cacheing in the BIOS, but there is no cacheing option in the BIOS anywhere I can find. So now when it boots the option comes up to run XP install or Windows 2000, and the default is XP install which runs into the same error and stops. But ever since that fiasco Firefox has had this problem. And I can't find a way to completely rid the boot of the XP option. Another reason to avoid XP as long as possible.

I guess I'll have to wipe the C and start over with 2000 from scratch - a couple of days work before it's fully restored.

Sounds like a dual-boot option. I haven't actually done that myself, but I would guess that the two choices are in the c:\boot.ini file and can be changed pretty easily.

The disclaimer: changing this file improperly could make your computer so that it will not boot any operating system at all, so proceed at your own risk.

First you will probably have to change a file attribute so that you can see & edit the file. Once you open the file for editing the structure is pretty obvious (at least to me ) so changing the default is as simple as
select,
copy,
select,
paste as replace.

PM me if you need more detailed instructions than that.

Hint: putting the same OS choice twice will cause Windows XP to display the choices (default is for 30 seconds), which has the benefit of also telling you what key to press to get the boot options menu (such as safe mode). This is one of my standard changes I make on every Win XP computer that I touch.

Turned out to be easier than that - there was a BOOT.bak file that I used to replaced the .ini. Now it just boots W2K like it used to. Thanks for the pointer!

But it still pitches me out of Firefox frequently.

Ahh Jim, 2000 is not the answer, XP is just fine, much better in fact.

If you have a xp CD, boot XP (Not off the CD) and ask XP to fix itself:

Start -> Run: type "SFC /scannow" (without the quotes).

After that has run, open up Internet Explorer and go to Windows Live OneCare, run that and go do something else for 2 hrs.

Sorry to say, I work on these things day in and day out, 2000 is a dull axe.

Linux is great, just what do you do with it ?

XP won't boot - it never installed. The install got only as far as putting up the blue-screen message about turning off cacheing in the BIOS. The boot choices are run 2000 or install XP.
