Default How to ID transmission and axles

Hey guys - how best to determine what transmission and axles are on my '82 CJ7?

My CJ7 has been lifted and has a fiberglass tub - so someone put some work into it. I'm just not sure if everything is stock or if he/she swapped anything out.

Thanks,

-John

give us some pics of everything. Take pics of the diff covers with a tape across them. Take a few of the trans and tranfercase. Make sure you get one of the adapter plate from the trans to transfercase.

Here is a link to some pictures I took a few months ago. Are these enough to ID everything?

You definately have stock axles... dana 30 front and AMC 20 rear. It looks like you have a very early 82 because it looks like those are narrow track axles. If the front axle has 6 bolt lockout hubs and the brake calipers are in brackets and not on two bolts, that would add to the possibility. The transmission really looks like a T5.

I just checked the hubs - and they have 5 bolts.

When I changed the front brakes - I remember seeing two bolts holding the caliper on.

I agree that those are short trac axels. The tires are well hidden inside the stock fender flares and the springs look very close to the tires.

You have a AMC 20 short trac rear & Dana 30 short trac front.
They come stock with a small metal plate on one bolt of the diff cover. That would tell you what gears you have. If that is not there then the easiest way is to pull the diff covers and it will be stamped on the ring gear. You should do this anyway so you can change the gear oil.

Is it a 5 speed? If so than I would also say it is a T-5.
Here is a link that will help you ID your trans.

It's a 4 speed - and I "believe" it's a SR4 or a T4 - but this is a guess.

Are there markings on the transmission which may help me ID the transmission?

Thanks.

Thanks. Looks like I have a T4.

Considering how "light weight" the T4 is - I'm thinking of doing an upgrade...
