| | O/T At what point do you.. At what point do you start selling parts to fund another build???? Life has been a little crazy lately, working six days a week and forking out money faster than I can make it. Going through the braces and teenagers is expensive. Anyway I had some cash stashed away for the buggy build, The Orthadontist is ready for my daughter and bam $4800 gone. So I have a couple loads of scrap to haul in but got to thinking and still need a lot more. So Im sitting out back looking and realize I have a narrow trac D44 with a Detroit locker in it out of my CJ5. I also have an AMC 20 and with a Detroit gearless locker in it and I have a Richmond Gear locker for a GM10 bolt out of a K5. Oh yah and the AMC20 has Moser shafts and another set of one piece shafts as well.
So the question is at what point do you realize you might not ever use this stuff again and start selling it ???? I just hate getting rid of that stuff because it never fails that you end up needing it for something..

| | Well, I think you've got your priorities correct...
At what point do you start selling the stuff off? At the point the stuff starts: - Becomes just "junk"
- You have no hope to use it in a build
- Other needs are more important
- You look at the pile of parts and no longer envension the build
- You start thinking you can sell the junk for money
- The money becomes more important than the parts
Sell the parts, take the money and take the family out for root-beer floats. That's a better payback than any pile of parts. |

| | the way i've looked at it is this:
lets say I have an axle....worth $200 or something....
I think: If someone gave me 200$ right now and i didnt have this axle, would I use the 200$ to buy that axle.
usually the answer is no....so i sell....
it might be slightly skewed, but it keeps my priorities straight.
plus, unless the item you have is rare or hard to find, you can always find an other if you actually end up needing it!
I'm thinking of selling my trailer for this exact reason...I'm not using it once the 2a is gone (Will is getting, so we'll expect results from him!) so why keep paying insurance and tags for a trailer just taking up space.....i'll get an other one later.
good luck with your decisions!

| | as soon as i look at something and think to myself... "i should sell that.."
if you have that thought.. get rid of it.. i have learned the hard way.. and kept way to much crap for far too long.. and had to move.. not once but several times.. so now.. when i have that thought.. i set it aside.. and when i get a little pile.. it goes on ebay.. unless i can find someone local who could use it.. then i either give it away or trade it.. or sell it for cheap.. |

| | LEVE & JeepGod are right. I've tripped over my junk for ten years.....needed money...sold it.... then needed it. Don't look back. Even if I wanted it later was it worth it storing it and being in my way that long?
Not for me.
My $.02.

| | I use this rule....
If I have to move it 2 times or more, and I don't have an immediate use for it....then it gets sold, given away or thrown in the trash.
Personally, I prefer Craigs list over Ebay....mainly because they come and pick it up.....and it's free.

i know a CJ that could use it
seriously, if you do get want to rid of it, it could be a candidate for my "stimulus" check

| | Why is it that as long as you have it you don't need it, but as soon as it's gone you need it?
Why is it when you need it you have to pay too much for it, but if you have it and want to sell it, nobody wants it?
Why is it once you find another one and pay way too much for it, you find others super cheap?
Why is it when you keep it around for years then need it, it won't fit?
My rule that I don't follow enough - if you aren't going to use it in the near future, IT GOES! You can always get another one. (That includes wives!)

| | I rate my parts by what I have. once I own a set of 60s I'll never use 44s ever again. one day I'll find a good 401 and will never want another 304.
I try to sell my stuff to the people that dream too much. they will want to do the same build that you wanted to do origionaly but they never will. this way you can eventually buy it back from them when they trip over it too much. if you sell your parts to your friends at least you can help with the build and you get to see it in action later.
