| | Project "Chick Jeep" Well I think I've got a deal made for the paint job on my CJ-5 but I can't see spending all that extra money for body repair when I know you guys will give me a crash course on everything I need to know. I see no reason why (with a lot of guidance) I can't do this myself. So here are some pictures of what the old girl looked like this morning.

| | So around noon today I went into tare down mode. Tail lights, all of the seats, side marker lights, rear fender flares, front fenders, and the hood were all removed today.

Don't look too bad! First, get an air compressor and some pnumatic tools. Then get a welder and some scrap metal and practice.

| | Well, after half a can of WD-40 and about three skinned knuckles that's what I got done today. I also removed the battery box and took all of the steel off of the seats. I still need to remove the windshield hinges and mirrors. I plan to take all of those items along with my chrome hood latch downs (beginning to rust) into town to get them powder coated. Can a master cylinder be powder coated as well? As you can see I have some rust to deal with, I do have a small 110 volt mig welder and I can use it...a little. I have a dent in the rear passenger side tub corner right under where the tail light was and I have a dent where the spare tire holder goes. My tub seems pretty solid except for some rust holes in the floor board on the drivers side.
Now you guys have seen what I'm up against....tell me what to do next.
kisses,
Trina

Well, what's your plan -- do you want something showroom quality or just a new paint job and to remove the rust?
On my '84, I just sanded the entire tub with 80 grit to remove the paint. The stickers were a real pain in the derrière. I think that I used heat, sticker remover, and a razor blade. I did not care about the paint underneath. It took forever. I then primed and painted. All I cared about was getting the rust off of the body and not patching the holes. I did not address the interior or underside of the tub.
If you want a showroom quality rebuild, then maybe a dip to remove the paint, stickers, and rust.

Hey there, I dont know what your after either, but I can tell you for my cj I grinded all the rust and other cancer, The prior owner also had a really nice carpet installed that was just held water like crazy, when it rained here, well I found that he installed it with a bunch of nails?? There were also some instalation holes from speakers and some other junk that I took out. I used a welder and welded the holes and the cancer, big areas should need replacement steel that is welded over the hole. I grinded the welds smoth and sanded. my interior is now a hurculiner. It cost me something like 80 bucks for a gallon kit and was really easy to install. I saw the same kit on sale at an autoparts store for 50 bucks last week. It covers up any flaws that might not have been taken care of with the grinder. The outside of my rig is touched up with Krylon! primer and gloss black for those outting when I want to impress my wife. LOL I scratch it to hell and back sand the paint a bit and more krylon keeps it looking sharp Heck you could even b creative and use Pink and Green!!!! Thanks for the myspace add

Interesting myspace,
As for the jeep, Were I doing it, I would pick at all the rust spots until I could determine how big they are then start cutting patch pannels and welding them in. You can also buy patch pannels but get the good ones, the cheaper ones are just that cheap. After fixing the obvious stuff I would start sanding much like Sour did clean it and Krylon or tractor paint it.
Where in KY are you located?

| | For those of you that haven't met me yet my name is Trina, I live in central Kentucky, and this is a follow up post from a different thread I started awhile back about interior issues I was having. Got me a pink dash pad, thanks guys. Here is the plan for the CJ. My 304 is leaking oil, my transission won't go into second gear and I need a new cluthch, Luckily I already have another 304 built and setting on the stand, I have another tranny that works just fine, and I have a new flywheel and clutch kit ready to go. I'm thinking of just pulling everything out, and replacing it with newer and better parts. Since the engine and tranny are coming out anyways, I might as well clean everything up under the hood and get my engine compartment painted as well. I already have a new hood, I'm getting new front fenders, and I have made arrangements to get the old girl painted up good as new, but I have to do the body repairs myself. rust in the floorboards, dents in the back of the tub, etc... one thing I forgot to mention, I found and bought a pair of new tub skins on ebay awhile back....$76, I don't know if they will work yet or not, they are still in PA, but I'll get them down here soon. Anyways, the finished result will be a black with hot pink lettering and trim Jeep that will see most of it's action on the pavement. Anything else you need to know, I'll do my best to explain what I've got. Just remember, you're talking to a rookie girl!!

Where in KY are you located? | I see you are in Southern IN and are relatively close to me. I won't say exactly where I live but I will be attending the Terrain Stompers meeting this Thursday night in Cincinnati, OH. Hope to see some of you there.
kisses,
Trina
