I had to grind a pretty big area for the ground clamp. Other than that I tried to leave as much as I could. I thought it would make it last longer, was I wrong?

| That's a good question. The enamel may have compromised the flow of the puddle as you welded. It will contaminate the weld at the least. Did that compromise the weld? Nope, I'd doubt it. I would have attempted to remove the enamel for about 1/4" in from the edges, and then I would have had new, clean metal to join.
But heck, who am I to argue with success.

Uh, yes. For good welds, especially MIG, you need clean metal. You can weld through paint, but it contaminates the weld and makes it porous. It will probably hold OK, but not be as pretty or strong as it could be.

I say if you can weld in that outfit and not jump around like a cat on a tin roof anything you end up with is good.
If it is on without a bunch of holes it is better than what was there orignaly, not sure how the paint will stick to it with the enamel on there, but again it is better than what was there...
We need to get you to stitching those pannels as opposed to one continuous bead. Cuts down on warpage.

The reason I didn't get any burns is because... I'm just that good
okay, seriously speaking now, the panel is going to be under the seat so as long as it holds it really doesn't matter how ugly my weld is. Also I'm going to use some kind of roll on line-x bedliner stuff on the inside of the tub. So most of my patch work won't show up to awful bad anyways. Do you guys have an opinion (ha, you always do) on what type or brand of roll on liner to use.
It has to be roll on because I can't afford the spray in stuff right now.... this build is draining my bank account.
By the way, I posted pictures of the new fenders in the fender thread... maybe it will get back on topic now!!!

Take a look at JU, there's a recent thread on Roll On bed liners that's been quite good:

I was thinking that I could start my own tanning salon. Have some chicks come over and stand around the garage in their bikini's while I weld my junk... (for a small fee of course..)
