When you get everything stripped off, go over it inside and out, top and bottom with a strong flashlight, a sturdy icepick and a small mirror. Look very closely at all of the body mounts, the seatbelt attachment points, and all of the places where two pieces of sheetmetal are joined. A body mount can look good while almost all of the metal between the rubber biscuits has rusted away. Poke hard in there with the icepick. This is one of the rear body mounts. The damage was completely hidden.

Then take a welding chipping hammer and inspect the frame carefully, again paying special attention to any place where they have joined two pieces of metal. Whack it hard with the pointy end. If the metal is good you won't hurt it. If it's bad, now is the time to find out. Look for bulges - rust is bigger than the steel it comes from.

Your Jeep was built with hundreds of joints where two flat pieces of bare steel were pressed against each other and welded, and all of those places hold water against the bare steel and promote rust. After thirty years of rusting there is probably enough damage in many places that it can cause safety problems.

When I restored my CJ7 I was shocked to see how weak the body and frame had become. In a crash the body could have easily been torn from the frame, the seatbelts pulled out of the body and the roll bar ripped right off. And the frame was so bad from the rear axle back that it would have collapsed like a pop can, right into the gas tank. Since you're building a street vehicle you must address those issues for your own safety and the safety of your passengers. This is what was holding the roll bar in.

And this is one of the body mounts in the frame. The hole was about an eighth of an inch smaller than the rubber. All that was holding it was a narrow ring of paper-thin steel.

Default rebuild your jeep

sounds like you have been getting parts together ... fron the pic i see the front frame does not look bad how is the rest of the jeep.... most of the time the rear back by the spring hangers is the worst spot... you dont want to do all the work without checking the complete under area of the jeep... the body mounts should be 13 spots where the jeep body bolts to the frame... need to check those... if they need repair.... you can get body mount kits also springs brakes steering all need to be looked at and this is the time when you are doing all the rest..... may be best just to take tub and rest off..... much easier to work on all those areas with the tub removed and it is not that hard to do..... something to think about we all can guide you on that also....

Hi guys, I have been really busy with nursing school today....FINALS. After Wednesday I'll be back to work on project "chick jeep" Believe it or not my frame is in really good shape, I am going to replace the shocks while I have it tore down though for sure. If I can keep from having to remove the tub I should be able to make some real progress by this time next week. Let me get my final exams finished an I'll be back to work and ready to call on you guys for almost everything I'm sure.

kisses,
Trina

well I'm still working on her guys.... I don't have a shop so I can only work when the weather is nice. Just about got all the rust repaired on the outside of the tub, and I still have a few places to patch up on the floor board, pretty minor though. Here I am sanding my little heart out on a beautiful Kentucky afternoon.
