Default Diagnostic scanner

A couple of days ago I asked to borrow the scanner from my favorite parts guy. He had it loaned out at the time, but he told me about some Snap On scanners for sale. It seems that there is a new on-board testing standard, and the old scanners can't be adapted to it. The Snap On guy is trading them in and selling them for $200 up, depending on condition and status of their updates. If you're looking for a scanner, you might ask your friendly neighborhood tool man to save you a good one.

And in other news, I asked my parts guy for a headlight switch for my Jeep. He said to hang on a second while he dug out an old book. In about fifteen seconds he had the part number. How many of you have a parts guy who has a book with part numbers for a thirty year old Jeep? How many of you have a parts guy who can even use a book?

My parts girl has a computer! and even after I tell her who manufactured the CJ5 and she finds the part number, it's still wrong!

That's why I go to Autozone, and use the computer myself.....

.... or if I have the time... do the chasing at home and tell the counter person the part number I'm looking for..... it doesn't guarantee the right part.... but it HELPS!

That's why I have my own parts catalog saved to the computer... it's nice to have the OEM parts number when I go to the autoparts store... or the (gasp!) dealer.

The local NAPA starts with the computer. It's rare that a part isn't in there but if it isn't, they all know how to use the books.

It's fun to go to the Jeep dealer... their computer only goes back to 1981 so for mine they always have to get the book out.
