Thanks for the input. My jeep has a Painless Wiring Kit #10105. Does anyone know if I will be able to make it work with the spider fuel injection system or is it easier to purchase another harness?

Is the Painless kit a stock replacement for the chassis harness or is it a kit for the new engine?

You can basically divide you electrical system into two parts, chassis electrical and engine electrical.

The chassis electrical is the harness that comes out of the fuse block connector on the drives side just below the brake booster. There are a few wires there related to the engine...Ignition, battery, crank, etc...but everything else is chassis related.

The engine harness goes to the computer through the bulkhead fitting near the battery....but in your case...no computer...so, those few wires in your chassis harness are ok...

When you go to FI, you can basically take the stock harness that came with the engine and wire it up as is...you only have to splice in a few wires from your chassis harness (Ignition, crank, etc) to get it going. It's actually a lot easier than you think.

(And why do I have this nagging feeling in the back of my head that tells me that I'm going to be doing a lot of posts on this subject.........)

Can you get an after market EFI kit that meets California standards?

Yes and no.
It's actually quite easy to get the vehicle smog approved when you change engines......AS long as the new engine is the same year or newer....and it's hooked up the same way as the veh it cam out of...

For example....my CJ is now a 93 Chevy 1500 P/U when it comes to smog testing....

So, yes, an aftermarket EFI system will be legal if when the smog station hooks up the OBD scanner and it tells him that it's the year that you say it is....and it passes all the smog tests.

Howel makes CA/C.A.R.B. legal kits for several motors.

Yea....Howell is a choice....but their systems are for engines that were originally carburetted.....in this case he wants to use a 97 engine which already has a TPI system....which I would want to keep over a TBI.

The Painless kit, I believe, is a stock replacement. It had already been installed when I bought the jeep. It was a complete system...Chassis and Engine. I do have the computer and everything else from the 97 S-10. Can it be wired without the computer? Are there any benefits?

Thanks again!

If you mean "Can you wire up the Vortec without the computer?" NO....it would be like trying to use your computer monitor without a computer....

Benefits? You will never again see a carbureted engine get close to the performance and gas mileage of a modern fuel injected engine......to take a great engine like the vortec and put a carb on it is like taking a new computer and loading DOS on it....

Don't let the computer scare you....it's actually a lot easier than you think.
