that engine is almost underpowered for the jeep let alone trying to pull something with it.

Yep. If you're thinking 5th wheel, keep it to a 28 footer or less.

I should probibly add some more. Yes my WIFES Commander would be a far better choice for towing. However my TJ is more comfortable for wheeling. So my wife stayes home with her commander and camps in the house. I take the kids camping and wheeling. I agree that stopping and steering is as imprtant as pulling. However, I dont go much further than 50miles each way when I go. So I think my TJ is sutable for pulling (a short distance).
Primarily Im getting very scarred taking my kids to the local jeep club camping trip. seems that everyone has been drinking. This year a guy walked up to the tree next to my tent to releave himself. and some drunk chick was Bit#$%#% about her husband next to my tent. Im very scared of some drunk jeeper not seeing my tent and driving over it. I always put my tent next to a tree and my jeep on the other side if it.
I hope that a camper would be more visable thus harder to run over...thus why I am looking for a camper. If it was just t me id remove the back seat and sleep in the jeep. the kids need more room though.
I do like the tent trax though.
Thanks

Don't take offense, but I wouldn't pull sqat with a 2.5 and I think unless stock or properly regeared most tj's with a 4.0 arent up to it.. While most would say that this is off topic, I would have to say nope, cause there is no camping trailer that should be pulled behind a 2.5
For 3 years we pulled a lightweight 4x8 trailer loaded half with wood and half with gear, all said there was likely less than 700lbs including trailer. With stock gears and tires I could run 65, but every time I hit a gap in the pavement the rear of the jeep jumped sideways and the fishtailing started. Later after a 3 inch lift and 32 inch tires, Can't get the same load to 60mph, and it walks all over.

Take it or leave it, but that engine is almost underpowered for the jeep let alone trying to pull something with it.

I don't understand the "underpowered" 4.0 bit. The late model 4.0 is what, 185-195 hp? That's as much horsepower as my 1989 Bronco had and that when Broncos were as big as they were ever going to get. I never towed anything massive with it but I never had trouble hauling around a camper or trailer.

My weak kneed cj7 with 304 will tow my M416 trailer loaded to the gills, and while somewhat underpowered in my opinion, I never experience the white knuckled imminent death feeling that some others say you'll be feeling while towing with a swb jeep. That's with a SOA rolling on 37 MTR's. I'm quite sure the tent/trailer combo loaded for a trail run is a good 800 lbs. The stock trailer alone weighs 550#.

Maybe I just go lucky but my lifted big tired jeep will roll down the highway at 70mph with no bad manners at all, even towing that trailer.

His 2.5 might be gutless but I don't see why it should be unsafe.

Read this over.

Maybe you need a new Jeep club. Doesn't sound like a place for kids or grownups.

Do you really need to belong to a club? I'm an independent, always have been, always will be. When I wheel, I wheel with like minded individuals, although those like minds are generally drunk, but the point is that you should be able to find people to wheel with that are more family friendly, and outings that are more to your standards.

Now, waaaaay back, I had a 2k lb pop-up that I towed for a very short time, and for the short time that I towed it, I yanked it just fine. My jeep was a 95 w/4.0, 4" lift and 33's. It wasn't re-geared, just running 3.55's, and for my highway time, I could maintain 70, with all the associated gear in it, along with my two kids and wife.

Safety is knowing your limitations and knowing your vehicles limitations, not the lawyerly recommended limitations.
