help! my jeep will only work in 4 high. no 2wd?

my 97 stock tj made a popping noise last night, popped out of gear and the 2wd wont engage. It goes into gear but i just hear a wineing. with the clutch all the way out I can move the gear shift through all the gears. it just works in 4h and 4L. any ideas on what the problem could be? thanks

Define "engage", won't g into gear, motor revs but no-go, what? Define funny noise funny like Ha-Ha or funny like uncle Harold [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

Seriously, give us some more info and we can help, that '97 TJ stock?

If the transfer case is truly 'in' 2WD and it doesn't move, I'd suspect output shaft for the rear drifeshaft let loose.

Otherwise, it may just not be engaging 2wd from neutral and it's something simple like shifter linkage is tight or rusty/gummy.

Hopefully its the latter of those cenarios.

The shift lever for the x-case is attached to the body of the jeep. Body/frame twist could pop the x-case out of gear or not let it go in gear. Also, sometimes when you take it out of 4 wheel, the system is bound up tight from making turns and such that it will not immediately drop out of 4. In that case, try backing up with a quick punch of the throttle then brake. Usually this is enough to take the pressure off and let it drop back to 2 wheel drive. If none of these are the problem, please give us more info.
