Should I be concerned about leaving the vacuum advance off for now?

Depends on your definition of trouble. It should start and run fine, but fuel useage will be way up. The vacuum advance is mainly an economy thing. Plug it back in. It has nothing to do with hard starting because it's inactive during starting.

The cranking is probably fine either way now. My commute is 2 miles so I'm not too concerned about the mileage yet. I think the vacuum advance is advancing too far. Can that happen?

Thanks, Mark

Sounds like you either have the WRONG source of vacuum to it - you have manifold on it now, or someone got creative and bypassed the solenoids that control it - a typical problem.

Either find the RIGHT vacuum source (ported) - preferred - or connect the solenoids correctly.

You'll notice a big improvement on performance and mileage.

It's real unusual for a bad battery to show up with the engine hot....it's the cold the usually kills the battery....

I think the failing alternator killed the battery early. The new one sure works great. I knew the voltage regulator was out just by watching the lights dim. Although that can still be typical at a very low idle.

I've got an early 70's GM 350 with an Edelbrock 4 barrel and Victor Jr. intake. (and misc other chrome the Jeep came with)

The vacuum hose was on a port on the lower front side of the carb. The guy I bought it from may not have known where it should be connected. (come to think of it, I don't either) I figured the vacuum diaphragm on the distributor might be old and moving the advance too far. I hadn't considered the hose being plugged into the wrong port. (it also crossed my mind that there might be a vacuum advance adjustment inside the distributor)

At least the weather is great.
Thanks, Mark
