The real clue is the OBD error regarding the battery disconnect...with that error code, any other sensor with an error code is questionable...if the computer is loosing it's battery feed, then the 5v supply would also go out...thus triggering some of the sensor errors.

And considering that his problems started after washing down the engine compartment....well...

I told Mike to do the wiggle and pull test....wiggle and pull on all the wires under the hood to see if it causes any issues....

If I remember correctly, the main fuse box is under the hood...I would want to pull all those fuses and make sure all the contacts are clean.

[/ QUOTE ]

Washing the engine bay and code says the battery has been disconnected during startups makes me supect the grounds. Check them anywhere: Battery, engine straps, black wires out of the loom that let the ECM and sensors ground, anything.

I would also suspect the power wires from battery to starting relays and to the fusebox. The fusebox itself is also a big suspect, espcially if you put the cleaner on it.

Just to be sure check the connectors an see if the CPS wire doesn't melt into the exhaust.

But it could also be somerhing stupid as a coil going south, only causing troubles as it warms up.

I would bet anything that it is a bad ignition coil.

i havent added anything ecently but i do have an amp hooked up to my battery for my subwoofer, it is under a ton of stuff in t he back of my jeep. ill disconnect it today and see if that helps, i am also gonna take out all of the fuses and check for water, plus all wire connections and check for water. when i took the cap off there was some dried up water spots under it but no water in the cap. my gas milage was pretty good the whole time. it was about where it is supposed to be realy nothing special or nothing bad, just right. i hope we can get this figured out today or ill have to have this thing towed back to charleston and catch a flight back.

If fuel pressure checked out it's a pretty good sign it's not your fuel unit but anything could happen at this point.

[/ QUOTE ]

Exactly, many folks will check the pressure and completely forget to check the *flow*! MBA's 4.0L ZJ had plenty of pressure, but not enough flow to keep the engine running...

I do agree that something appears to be WET and likely aggravated by the low temps in the south...

[/ QUOTE ]

Yep, Flow, not pressure. Doesn't sound like my pump symptoms, but just so you can rule out the pump, or possibly discover it is the pump.

1. Mine would drive fine under lite throttle pressure (not much flow). Under heavier throttle it would stumble.

2. pull the fuel return off the fuel rail. Stick a hose on the fitting on the fuel rail and run it into a bucket. fire the engine up and you should have a good bit of fuel being returned. I had none before pump replacement, and a healthy shot after replacement.

good luck.

well i wiggled all of the connections and i went to the shop and had the mechanic hook up his computer again and drove for about 12-15 miles and it wouldnt do it. it hasnt done it since i have played with the conenctions, but i also havent had it out on the highway doing 70 for too long. i am goananhave the cps replaced becasue the mechanic has a zj that did the same thing as my jeep and he replaced the cps and it solved his problem. i have replaced alot so far and all ill have left to replae if it isnt the cps is the coil or the fuel pump. mind when we hooked up a fuel pressure guage we had really good fuel pressure. i dont thin that the fuel pump is over heating becasue it is working the same at idle for 20 minute as it is on the highway for 20 minutes. plus it seems to not happen when we are going under 70 mph. well i am at a holiday inn right now so i wont be able to talk to you guiys anymore till i get to another hotel with wirelss internet or i make it home. ill just replace the cps and keep it under 65mph and hope it works.

We ot our TJ used at 81,000 miles and I could NOT BELIEVE the number of (-) connections under the hood and elsewhere that were corroded. I would love to wash the engine, but my experience has been that water is TROUBLE around black boxes; especially TJ black boxes. The big engine ground on the RH side of the engine is a major suspect. It has multiple terminals stacked one atop the next.

Not to add confusion but I'm sorta with CJDave on this one. My former boat had a single 496 mpi and did the same thing. Boats get used fairly hard and anything can loosen up due to waves, etc. Somebody told me it was the coil and I didn't beleive it. Breaking down 20 miles out in the bay sucks more than you can believe, I tried a coil, problem solved! Just an fyi!

my dad has a 76 toyota fj that was would sputter and backfire something awful.
we started by replacing the fuel pump, didnt fix it.
did a tune-up, wires, plugs, rotor, cap, points, it just backfired harder.
tried adjusting the timing, nothing.
so we start thinking he's got some bad valves.
about 2 weeks later i went out to just stare at the thing and i noticed that the coil was leaking a little oil.
put on a new coil and voila. its like the thing was telling us, "ok you idiots, if you cant figure it out on your own..."
a bad coil will make a vehicle do some funny things, youd almost never expect it to be the coil.
