Default Starter Motor Winch

Has anyone out here in Cyber Space ever made their own winch using a (FOMOCO... so you can have a spare on the trail)starter motor as a base?

LEVE, from what I've seen, while a series-wound winch motor is similar to a starter motor, starter motors typically aren't bi-directional. They don't have the proper external connections. Just like a hydraulic power unit motor. Same type of motor, but it only goes one way.

You would need a motor with 2 external field winding connections, as well as an armature connection, to make it power in and power out.

Of course, if you just wanted to freespool out, and power in only, a starter motor would work, but now your solenoid configuration would need to be revised.

All valid points, however you can take care of spooling directions/issues via gearing and a transmission. Hey, this is just a pipe-dream-project... taking up my otherwise valuable time.

Keep those ideas coming!

It's going to be a while until I can make anything, but there's time to think about it. Right off I don't like the idea of reversing it with a transmission. Too often you will want to reverse it under load, and the transmission isn't going to like that.

Would it be too difficult to pass the field leads to the outside of the case? Or isolate the ground and bring it out of the case?

If the motor can be reversed, it's just a matter of gearing, and my inclination would be to use a worm gear like a Ramsey winch. That eliminates the need for a brake.

My old bellview winch is only power in. It basically just uses a old starter motor. When i burned the orginal motor up a couple of years ago. I found a old ford starter, that was just about the same and would have work with minor mods. Just needed brushes and such. I just ran out of time and bought a new motor. So yes it could be done.

If you need a reversible tranny
for a winch, how about the bands and
clutches from an automatic tranny?
There might be a small enough yet
common part out there.Put the worm-
gear between the tranny and drum
to ease the load on the tranny.
Manual activation of clutches with
levers would simplify electrical,
but might complicate mechanical.
Would the gearbox have to be sealed
in ATF and hooked to a cooler?
Or am I getting too Rube Goldberg?

I'd be happy with a winch that you simply disengaged the spool to release cable. I've never used my winch to lower objects, although I'm sure there are jeepers who find this essential.

Is the timing so far advanced on a starter motor that you can't make it run backwards at all by simply reversing the polarity? Maybe you could mount the starter motor in electrical isolation from the winch and vehicle frame so that you could simply reverse polarity to it.

Reverse is a must when righting most turned over vehicles!!!
