Default building efficient 304

I have a factory new 304 shortblock that I picked up a while back and I am finally getting around to building it to put in my CJ. I would like to get some ideas on how best to build it for improved fuel economy yet a few more horses. I'm thinking of things like roller rockers, a mild cam, HD oil pump, and possibly an aftermarket fuel injection system and exhaust system, etc. Any one with experience or ideas on this please reply.

I haven't heard very much about them, but from what I've heard Holley aftermarket fuel injection kits are among the best that can be had. Either the ProJection, or the MPI II kits. If money isn't a big issue, I'd go with the MPI II holley fuel injection kit, because it's one of the ones with one injector for each cylinder. If you get the more expensive unit, they allow you to hook up your IBM compatable computer and set the entire fuel curve to that particular engine if you want. Supposedly gets hp and torque gains over a carbuerator and as far as they say, better mileage as well. Be sure to let us know how this project turns out, because (if finances permit eventually, Tim wants a Jeep), and fuel economy and power couldn't hurt.

There is a lot more that you will need to do besides putting "Go Parts" on that 304. You need to upgrade the oiling system...in TWO places! There is an outfit in Florida that has all the answers you will need regards hopping up an AMC mill. I think it is AMERICAN PERFORMANCE.

Parts mike has the info and parts for the oiling system too. Basicly the block for the oil filter is drlled and taped for a line. The line is run up to the timing cover where another hole is drilled and taped to supply better oil to the dist. gear. Personally i had over 200k. on my 304 before i rebuilt it and there was not a problem there. I did replace the dist. but it was becuse the shaft inside was worn a little so it rattled. I run it now with headers, k&n filters but otherwise stock and it gets up pretty good even with my 35's and stock gears on it. And i get killer gas milage. I would like to install a 4 barrel and have the heads ported a little and mabey milled down to up the compression some but it's good for now.

Here's a site you might want to check out for your oil pump parts
http://home.earthlink.net/~fsro/oilpump.html
Summit Racing has Harland Sharp roller rockers for $199.99 .... they require the head to be tapped for screw in studs. This will reduce internal friction and supposedly add 15-40 hp.

BTW-the term efficient 304 is an oxymoron
