Default York on Factory Brackets

I mounted my York a few months ago on a complete set of factory brackets. I am not able to keep tension on the idler/cranks/compressor pulley. I mounted the compressor in the holes that are closest to the engine block. Should I have used the mounting holes farther out, away from the block?

what motor? what acessoriesdo your belts go around. The belts are different for a non a.c. My v-8 mounts the compressor wth no adjustment and uses the alternator to tension the belt. Go to the parts store and get a smaller belt it's easyer than remounting the compressor.

If this is a 6 cyl, you will have to do a bit of grinding to get the compressor to mount on the outer holes. I did this on mine to give more spark plug clearance. The outer crank pully is also different on A/C engines. It is a larger diameter. They are easy to find in wrecking yards off old AMC cars. I would recomend doing this insted of getting a shorter belt.

I am running the 258. inner belt goes from the upper pulley to the Power steering pump. A belt runs from the York to the Alt. A third belt (on the outer side, goes York, down to crank, up to idler (on the drivers side, back to the York. That is the one giving me fitting problems. Jeeprz, did you have to grind the shoulder of the bolt hole that is on the front passenger side of the bracket? It looks like it would cause a clearance problem. I did not change the crank pully, I never new there was a size difference. That would explian the belt problem that I was having.

I'm not sure of the 6 cyl but if you change the pully then you might need to change the fan pully too. On the v-8 they are a set. The crank is bigger and the fan is smaller or they will hit eachother.

Only the crank pully needs to be changed,as the a/c belt does not run the waterpump. There was a smalllocating boss near the bolt hole closest to the righ front. I had to grind it down for the compressor to mount flush on the bracket. I needed a bit longer belt in order to do this. If you dont change the crank pully, you may have some belt slippage, and poor charging at idle speeds due to incorrect pully ratio.

I did take that small boss off with a hack saw. It cut off much faster that any of those compressor bolts came out. After that, I moved the compressor to the outside. I was able to use the factory belt and the original pulley on the crank.
Thanks for the help.
