Default Signs Of A Bad Throwout Bearing???

Hey Guys

I think either my throwout bearing or the input bearing on my Tranny is starting to go.

How can i tell the 2 apart and what are the sounds of them going bad?

Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks

When my throwout bearing was bad it made a loud noise when the clutch was engaged but as soon as I let it out the noise went away. Not sure how to tell apart the other bearing. Mike

My CJ did the same thing. Clutch in = no noise. When it was in gear or neutral, it made a whirring noise. Did not happen in 4th (direct drive). Turned out to be the input shaft bearing on the trans (T176). If you hear the noise as you're pushing in the clutch, it's the throwout bearing.

One other thing, if you hear a noise with the pedal depressed an inch or so its your pilot bearing/bushing.

my throwout bearing is starting to make some noise, normally does it when its in the the morning or when its cold. Once its warmed up it stops. I am hoping to make it through the winter so I can do it in the warm weather

Hmmm

It makes a whirring squealing type sound when i am driving and as soon as i press the clutch in it goes away.

Sound like an input bearing of the tranny?

Thanks guys!

If it goes away when you press the pedal down, its the pilot bushing or bearing. If it makes noise when you push pedal down, its the throwout bearing..either way it sucks

***** Yup, it totally goes away when i press the clutch in. It ONLY makes the noise though when i am driving NOT at idle.

If it is the pilot bearing i feel comfortable enough to replace that myself. If it is the Input Bearing for the tranny, thats another story. Hmmm, maybe it will be ok until its warm out! LOL

How can i check for sure?

thanks

NO NO NO. The way to tell if it is a pilot bushing is like I said before, it will make noise in the first inch or so of travel, its kind of a low howling noise. Pushing the pedal all the way in and having the noise go away MAY indicate a pilot bushing, but you need the other symptom, otherwise it is symptomatic of a bad input bearing.

No noise comes or goes when the clutch is depressed or released at idle.

The ONLY noise it makes when when i get on the gas at any speed over 10mph and it only goes away when the clutch is pressed in. I havent tried pressing it in 1/2 way while driving but i can try that tomorrow.

Dumb Question: Can i do any serious damage driving this?

thanks
