Default Trouble codes?

Is there a way to get trouble codes from a 90 cherokee. I have a manual that shows 91 and later 4.0L, but not 90. The problem I'm having is my jeep stalls, misses, ect. during acceleration. It will idle ok but seems to be running rich. I've checked my vacuum, egr valve, new spark plugs, distrubuter, cap, rotor, checked map sensor, ignition coil and no solve yet.

Default Re: Trouble codes?

The Renix computer used with '87-'90 XJs wont't store trouble codes like the newer ones do. The dealer has a tool called a DRB2 that can run a system test on the Renix equipt XJs. Expect to pay around an hour labor for this test.
Have you checked the fuel pressure? It should be approx 30psi at idle, 40 psi with the pressure regulator disconnected from vacuum. If it drops off under a load, it could need a fuel filter or a new fuel pump. Also check the TPS (throttle position sensor) with a voltmeter, a service manual is helpfull here. The crank position sensor also can give much trouble, especially when starting. I also once had a broken valve spring give a similar complaint. It would close the valve ok at idle, but not when the engine was reved.
I hope this helps, Good luck.
