Trasmission question for a CJ7 85'

I'm having SERIOUS transmission problems, basically it's time for a new transmission. But I'm a little lost on a few things. One is what the heck is the difference between a "Transmission, a tranny, and a t-case" are they are the same thing?

Next, I own an '85 CJ7, what model of transmission should I be looking for? Or is it just a matter of what kind of performance I want? Honestly, most of my driving is street driving, so I don't offroad much but I'd like to be able to handle it when I do go offroading. Thanks for any help

A transmission is the main gearing device in the driveline between the engine and the axles (on Jeeps like your CJ; there are two driving axles). They can be manual or automatic. "Tranny" is merely a nickname for a transmission. A Transfer Case is a device on 4x4 vehicles that splits the power from the transmission to the front and rear axles. Most are two speed (high and low range), like the one in your CJ. In that sense, they are a transmission of sorts. Most transfer cases are mounted on the transmission. They are recognizeable by the two drive shafts coming out of them.

You should begin by finding out what transmission and transfer case are installed in the CJ and go from there. There should be a nameplate on each of them. Good Luck!!
