| | | Quadratrac question
A friend of mine just picked up a cj with the quadratrac in it. He was wondering how the quadratrac actually worked. He knows how to shift it in and all that but he was wondering about the technical stuff. Is it the axles the lock or is it in the transfercase. This jeep is beyond repair to be driven and he wanted to swop it into his other jeep if its not too hard.
Thanks for any info.

The Quadratrac has a differential in the case. If you have one in the CJ that is two speed (4wd high and low) then the diff. locks in low range. The problem with a swap is that the rear yoke is off set to the right and you would need a rear axle with the pumkin off set to the right (passenger side) of the vehicle.

I would tell your friend not to put a quadra trac system in a CJ. I have the Quadra trac in my Grand Cherokee and have issues with it. For on, it is all time 4WD which is annoying at times. Also, they have a tendency to have the viscous coupling internal to the T-case go bad. This causes the front and rear axles to lock up and put undo strain on the entire drivetrain (this is the problem I have). Lastly, the Quadra-trac system does not have the greatest traction control. You cannot manually lock the front and rear axles like you can with the command trac/ selectrac systems. This makes your jeep get stuck when others will not. I would suggest the select trac if he wants to swap out. The Quadra-drive system which works with special axles is different than the quadra trac and is much better for traction. |

Although they have the same name, the Quadra trac in the 1990s Grand Cherokee and the 1970-80s CJs are quite different. The CJ and Full sized Wagoneer and Cherokee quadra trac system was made by Borg Warner and the New GC was made by New Venture Gear. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
