| | | 87cherokee stalls
May someone out there has run it to this problem. My girls 87 cherokee will stall and hard to start and smell of gas at start. New cat, new tps throttle positioning senser, new fuel filter, air filter, and sprayed the throttle body. Thelatest thing she notice was that now that is living at school and not driving as much when the tank is full there does not seem to be a problem. She seems to think it happens when the tank is low not empty on fuel. Any help or expierence is appreciated. Can not throw any more money on the wrong parts. Thanks Ed ke6bnl |

Could it be vapor locking? Is it fuel injected or carb'ed? |

Just got a call from my daughter and she says now that it is stalling even with a fill tank with just short 6mile runs. I am lost for the next check. Thanks ke6bnl |

Check the vacuum hoses for leaks or damaged hoses. Check the EGR valve, it might be sticking open at idle or low rpms and causing the stall outs.
Good Luck. |

Update on 87 cherokee. checked fuel mangement, pressure, leak down and vacuum reg for fuel pressure all test ok. Checked for any vacuum leaks not hoses leaking . Tested EGR for machanical operation and it moves freely, BUT the vacuum diaphram for the EGR is defective and putting 28 inches of vacuum on the EGR does not make the warmed engine stall as per the book. diaphram is defective and I plugged the vacuum line till further study. ANY SUGGESTION APPRECIATED. Ed ke6bnl |

Replace the Egr valve and let us know if anything changed. Even if nothing changes it's one more broken part you won't need to fix later. |

The EGR valve isn't supposed to open while the engine is idling. If the valve were working, the engine would stumble when at idle. Since it's not opening due to the bad diaphram with all the vacuum you applied, it might very well be the cause of your stalling problem. Besides, the normal operation of the valve keeps the emissions in line and lowers the combustion temperature a considerable amount perhaps preventing the exhaust valves from being burned. Andy is right; replace the valve.
