Jeep Grand Cherokee Questions - Off-Road Forums & Discussion Groups

I've been looking to buy a mid 90s Jeep Cherokee, not a Grand, but am finding them next to impossible to find. I'm now considering possibly a Grand Cherokee. What common problem areas are there with the Grands? Is it possible to get the 4.0 straight 6 in one? Are they all full time 4 wheel drive, or can you get one in part time 4 wheel drive. My wife's Cherokee gets quite good gas miilage, how do the Grands fare? Should I counsider a Grand or keep looking for a regular Cherokee?

The grand is bigger and heavier (thirstier) and can have more electronic gremlins (expensive). Some have the i6, no idea if they are available with the commandtrac (full time option) commandtrac (only parttime) or other (fulltime only) transfercase. I remember some over here swapped their fulltime TC for an NP 231 select trac.

I would go for an XJ. But that's just my preference. An i6 grand is probably as hard to find as a nice cherokee.
