89 to 92 is pretty much a direct swap as long as both have same transmissions. Wiring will be same same, the major changeover year for cherokee's was 93, that's when things like cooling system and electronics started getting changed and what not. If your going to the effort to pull it and swap, get a complete seal and gasket kit and go through it while it's out, save you huge headache later. Also I would do away with the old closed loop cooling system and order up a new radiator for a 93 or later and swap that in also, there is a lot of excellent info on that particular change and/or I would gladly give you more pointers on it if you would like as I have done the very same to my jeep, both in the engine swap and the cooling system swap. I swapped an 87 4.0 into my 90 cherokee that had a very tired wore out 4.0. The engine swap is a 2 day event, so pick up the case of beer for the after install celebration, some asprin and bandaids for the actual event, and good luck. Let us know how you fair and /or come back and ask if you have any other questions. I still get on here once in a great while.
