Default '96 Cherokee - cutting out while driving

Hey folks, we're new to owning Jeeps. I need some experienced thoughts.

Got a '96 Cherokee that likes to cut out while driving down the road. The check engine light does not illuminate.

Yesterday we did replace the coil. That was cracked all to heck. When it cut out with the cracked coil, the Gen light did illuminate.

Anyhow, like I said, no CE light now but the truck cuts out, and it will just die. Both over bumpy roads and smooth hwy cruising.

Truck is all up to date on maintenance, fluids are good, filters are good. It looks just like a bad ground or a random disconnection of power as it just quits. But all the obvious areas have been checked. Is there a spot particular to this model that can be trouble?

No takers??

We found the ECM connection to be involved. It was unplugged and replugged and the truck has yet to act up. We aren't certain if it is the TBS on the lose pin/connection or if the plug was just not seated properly. We'll keep an eye on it.

Hope this cured it. I do not recognize your problem as typical XJ and never experienced something similar. So better no answer that something useless from my side.

It's a bit quiet lately over here. I'm sorry.

But keep us posted. Always good to learn.

HEY shorts, GLAD TO SEE YOU AROUND ! And owning a jeep no less :-)
As far as the problem your having, if it continues after this, just replace the ECM, had same problem with the wifes 96 Grand Cerry back when we owned it, and I struggled to find the problem until I talked to the right person who told me they were a known problem. If it was a loose connection, then no worries for you. BTW, can I assume you are now back in the states? Havn't talked to you in so long last I remember you were still over sea's.

Hey Kraby!

Yup we are stateside again. Got back in February. We're currently house hunting up in Dallas and setting up here. I'm glad to be back.

As for the Cher'kee it's been running smooth since. ...knocks on wood... DH hasn't let his guard down though lol

What he is having trouble with is the neutral safety switch when starting the truck. He's got to press the gear shift forward a bit while he turns the key in order to turn the truck on.

I haven't look at the book in detail yet, but it's a Haynes manual. Which for me, compared to Chiltons, is less than useful

Any tips to get that switch replaced?
