Which 700r4??

I just got Cherokee Pioneer. It has a 2.8 chevy V6, auto trans.With carb, no EFI nor TBI. Interior is pristine, only 60k miles on the engine.Everything works fine, so I just want better mileage on long trips.That's when the 700r4 overdrive comes in handy.So, For which Chevy should I look for as the donor?
What about the transfer case? Any mods, adapter needed? A guy told me I better do the whole engine/tranny/transer swap from any S10 or Blazer, but he wasn't sure(neither do I) which year to look for.
Any ideas, thoughts,suggestions?
