Default identify the engine in just obtained 85 Pioneer

I need to id the engine in a 85 Pioneer I just got and want to get on the road. What I know: It has a 1 bbl Rochester mono-jet carburetor, #17054020 which is listed as coming on a 1977, Chevrolet 250 cid I6. The vin number decodes as having a 2.5l 4 cylinder, 4 wheel drive Auto trans. The engine in the Pioneer is a 4 cylinder. stamped on the right side about half way down the block between cylinder 3 and 4 is a machined surface with 41OU23 stamped there. Just below that is a raised cast 7 digit number 826(this 6 may be an 8 or a G) 9448. also lower down in the same area are the raised letters EF and a raised AT. the carb sits up higher than a original equipment carb so that the air cleaner mounting has broken lose from the carb because of hitting the hood when closed. it does not seem to be a 151 GM Pontiac engine as used in the early days of the model because the exhaust and intake are on the same (drivers) side. Then engine runs ok, no unusual noise or knocks, but hard to start and floods easily. The electric choke has a wire but none on the idle stop. I drove it to my location approx 50 miles on freeway but do not want to run it anymore without a functional air cleaner. any help figuring out what I have to start with will be appreciated. thanks jmczzz

Sounds like someone once put another carburetor on the engine. Doesn't sound as if the engine itself is another type than what should be originally in this car. An '85 4-cilinder was equipped with one barrel carter YFA carb according to my haynes. From '86 they had an electronic TBI system. No idea if the YFA's were bad. Try to get a set (carb, aircleaner, whatever else needed) from a donor vehicle, or see if some shop has a complete rebuilt carb on te shelf.

Default carb swap

I think you are right about the carb swap. However I was hoping someone could help me confirm / Identify the engine as being a AMC engine from the numbers (see 1st post). Do these numbers look to be the same code system as used by AMC on their engines? I got the pioneer at an auction so I have no back ground info and this is my first jeep project.
You are right about the carter being stock I am trying to find one to see if it fits.
thanks, jmczzz

Default welcome to AMC

welcome to the world of AMC produced vehicles, the kings of outsourcing! they bought parts from everybody, gm motors, motorcraft(ford) ignitions and on and on, I don't know about your 4cyl, but during those years they were into GM corporate motors in cherokees, and GM used the same motors in various GM brands so keep looking there, take yor numbers to the local GM dealer and see what he knows.

Post an image. Easy enough to see.

There aren't too many non-cross flow designs other than the AMC 4 banger in the 80's. No one would design it that way from scratch that late in development.

An image would surely make it easy to confirm or discount this.
