| | tranny problem?
93 xj inline 6 4.0l a/t 2wd. as of recently when i am driving and i hit the brakes too hard it shifts into neutral. it seems that when i let the truck warm up it doesnt do it as much but when it goes into neutral it wont go back into gear until i give it a little gas. i dont think that it could be a shift cable because is a console shift. maybe a tourque converter? any help would be great thank you

Check the cables and mechanism and check the engine mounts for wear. That's where I would start.

let me add this even if i am just putting it into drive and let off the brake sometimes it wont go into gear until i give it some gas. also about three months ago i used my jeep at work to pull a trailer that was in my opinion a bit too heavy for the truck. i have checked the fluid and its not burnt or anything but im thinking that i messed sometimg in the tranny up but i will check the linkage being that it is the easiest and most obvious thing to check first. thanks nix

I'm not very familiar with the AW4 tranny as I Have BA10 that's still in one piece. But I do know the auto has its own computer. The computer is fed by some of the senosrs, including the TPS. The auto has a double one. Maybe this one can be adjusted a bit somehow, maybe your problem is a result of the heavy trailer. I wish I could be more of a help.
I can see If I can find some links that may be helpful, but I'm not sure.

well i dont know if you recall but i was on here about a year ago i was on here asking about a stalling problem. you suggested a cps but before i got one i did almost every other sensor on the truck except the o2. so as far as the tps it is brand new (almost anyway). i believe that it is self adjusting becuase it has a pin inside that is controlled electrically to spin out and in like its threaded if i explained that right. so im not sure how i could adjust it. the tranny itself has about 200,000 on it so mabye a clogged trans filter? im with you on the auto trans i dont have much experience now if it was a manual i would not have a prob but autos are new to me. i really cant afford to take it to shop right now so anything fairly cheap that i could do would be great

I'd start with trans filter and trans fluid flush. Have you looked at the fluid for color and smell. if brown or burnt smell then it needs changing. also low fluid can cause that sort of problem but i'm certain you already verified that.

yeah i checked the fliud level and smell and color all were good. could the wrong type of trans fluid do it because i put about half a quart of i think its was dexron 111 and later read to find that it may take dexron11 so maybe thats it? do you know what it takes?

Sorry i don't know what your trans requires. simply asking at the parts store should give you the answer. DEX III meets or exceeds DEX II specs. dont think that could be the trouble if it calls for DEX II.
