| | starting troubles
I have a 2000 jeep cheroke sport, on cold mornings the thing wont start. the battery stays charged but it just wont turn over it just ticks. we put a tester on it and it said that the altenator was good, i cleaned the solenoid cables and it started for about a week then it went back to its ticking again, the starter is strong so i know that its not that, i dont understand hy it doesnt want to start. Once its sterted you can shut it off and it will start right back up.
any advice would be nice
thanks

Sounds like a bad solenoid to me.

How cold are you talking about and how many cold cranking amps does your battery have??? If I don't have 800 or more CCA's, once it get's down around the 30* and lower I can forget about starting... Your battery can have a dead cell and still show 12v and even test good.... Just some thought's for you. Id imagine it get's a lot colder than the 30's where you're at........ Once you start drawing juice and charging the battery after running it awhile, it's going to start because your battery isn't at the outside temp anymore.

| | Replace the battery
Had a similar problem with my wife's Cherokee. I then checked each individual cell with a hydrometer. One cell checked slighly low. Replaced battery. No more start problems.
Good luck,Bill

Bad battery connections will do this. I put a bypass switch directly to the small wire on the starter so I have a push button in case the neutral safety switch fails

| | got it
after cranking to many times and ruining the starter i replaced it and the solenoid only to have it still not start, it wasnt the battery cause it was new and was reading over 800 cranking amps, turns out it was the starter ignition fuse in the fuse relay box replaced it with the one for my electric fan real quick and it started right up.
