Default Tail light failed fault on 1996 G/C

A friend has a 1996 Grand Cherokee with 165k miles on it and was asked what the fault is. On the screen on console the screen indicate tail lights out fault blinking all the time. She assured me the lights have been working for the 4 years this fault has been on screen. I have never seen anything like this and wondered if anyone else has experienced this fault. If so, did you have it fixed and how. Any help would be appreciated on this as it has totally stumped me so far. BTW the Jeep runs great otherwise. Thanks, Sam near Detroit, MI

Check if there's no burnt Duplex bulb. Sometimes a ground problem in the light or wires can cause funny things. See if al contacts function properly. Sometimes the contacts as well as the bulholders can be a bit corroded.

There is more than one bulb in the high mounted rear tail light. I don't remember how many exactly (4 or 5 I think). One of these is most likely burnt out. At a glance when someone steps on the brakes, the light is still bright enough that you may not notice it has one bulb out (maybe more). Replace burnt bulbs and I think fault code goes away on it's own, although you may have to reset it, been so long since I had my 96, it's hard to recall.
